Programme Note
‘Unbroken Fragments’ was written in response to a commission from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama for the wind ensemble there. It was my second Wind Quintet, the first being one of my very earliest works composed in 1967.
Like much of my recent music ‘Unbroken Fragments’ is both pandiatonic and modal. It is also typical of my work in that it is in a single movement form. It has a number of quite short, contrasting, sections which are played without a break – hence the title. The sections tend to increase in tempo and liveliness so that the work starts slowly and reflectively and ends brightly.
